I am currently a final-year university student completing my Bachelor of Science (Mathematics) degree at the University of New South Wales (UNSW). I have been a tutor for the past three years, and have taught over 100 different students during my career.
In terms of credentials, I am maintaining a High Distinction average across all of my university courses. I completed my HSC in 2004, and achieved a UAI of 99.85. My HSC maths marks were 99 for Extension II and 99 for Extension I..
Because of my high HSC result and overall academic achievements, I am also the winner of the UNSW Mathematics Teachers Scholarship.
Of course, high marks rarely correlate to good teaching skills, which in my opinion are more important than credentials when it comes to finding a good tutor. Therefore I invite you to have a read of the other sections of my website detailing my past experience as a tutor, as well as my teaching style, before making up your mind.
Naturally, I have a passion for teaching. What I enjoy most is being able to help students who are willing to put the work in, to achieve their goals. The fact is, with my UAI and HSC results, I could have done Law, Medicine, Aerospace Engineering, or just about any university course I wanted. I chose to do a teaching degree instead, because I know I'd make an excellent teacher.
For grades K - 10
I run many classes for younger grades, and I notice a recurring pattern for younger grades: strong fundamentals. The Board of Studies syllabi set for these grades are aimed at covering new material, and establishing strong foundations in mathematics for students.
Tutoring can help your child immensely through rigorous explanation and exercise in setting strong foundations of knowledge, especially during the time when young minds are most apt to learn.
For HSC students:
I understand what it is like to be a HSC student. To have ambitions can be daunting, especially if there's large shoes to be filled. Having to deal with the uncertainty of what UAI you'll get is a huge psychological burden. However, getting a sufficiently high UAI is the practical part, and that's where I help.
Of course, even if your child is unsure about what he/she wants to do yet, getting the highest UAI possible keeps your options open. The last 2 years of high school, culminating to the HSC, determines a large aspect of your future career as it determines what you will be doing in university. Therefore, maximising one's UAI opens the most doors.
As reflected by my university degree and HSC results, mathematics is my strong point and area of focus. Highly scaled subjects such as Math Ext II and Math Ext I are absolutely important in achieving a high UAI (breaking the 99+ barrier, as we used to call it!). (For more details on how scaling works, click here) Ask around, and you will find that almost 100% of Math Ext II students have tutors. The case is similar with Math Ext1, because both courses are undeniably two of the most demanding courses in the HSC. But they also can be two of the most rewarding, due to scaling.
